Description:

Julia becomes increasingly obsessed and disturbed by the story of the family, particularly that of Sarah Starzynski, the 10-year old girl who would become the only survivor of the Nazi occupation. • Must Read

This book is a must read! The way the past & present are woven together is amazing. I could not put this book down and read it in one night. It is sad, you will cry, you will read about the horrible things that human beings do to each other but you will also see that human beings also have grit, determination, and the capacity to do the right thing.

this one still makes me sad. i care so deeply about the suffering of others who are not in a position to help themselves. i know there are horribly cruel humans in this world, sometimes i wish i could be a separate entity from them, but i cannot, so speak out against cruelty in any form, whether it be humans or the other wonderful creatures here who live with us.

    • Sarah's Key

I would highly recommend this touching story to everyone who is willing to read more about the terrible atrocities of Nazi halocaust, I had not heard of the happenings of July 16th in Paris before and have since researched historical documentation. The book bothered me at first, with alternating chapters of "present" and "past" but about halfway through it seemed to come together. Such a sad tale, but worth the read.

  • Starred ReviewDe Rosnay's U.S. debut fictionalizes the 1942 Paris roundups and deportations, in which thousands of Jewish families were arrested, held at the Velodrome d'Hiver outside the city, then transported to Auschwitz. Forty-five-year-old Julia Jarmond, American by birth, moved to Paris when she was 20 and is married to the arrogant, unfaithful Bertrand Tezac, with whom she has an 11-year-old daughter. Julia writes for an American magazine and her editor assigns her to cover the 60th anniversary of the Vel' d'Hiv' roundups. Julia soon learns that the apartment she and Bertrand plan to move into was acquired by Bertrand's family when its Jewish occupants were dispossessed and deported 60 years before. She resolves to find out what happened to the former occupants: Wladyslaw and Rywka Starzynski, parents of 10-year-old Sarah and four-year-old Michel. The more Julia discovers-especially about Sarah, the only member of the Starzynski family to survive-the more she uncovers about Bertrand's family, about France and, finally, herself. Already translated into 15 languages, the novel is De Rosnay's 10th (but her first written in English, her first language). It beautifully conveys Julia's conflicting loyalties, and makes Sarah's trials so riveting, her innocence so absorbing, that the book is hard to put down. (July) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC.
