I have no hesitation in declaring that RUTH is one of the best novels I have ever read. I found it a far richer, more complex and intellectually meaty treatment of the subject of adultery than THE SCARLET LETTER. A generation of students would be much better served if they were introduced to this work of Elizabeth Gaskell's. The fact that we think very differently about the subject than did the people of Gaskell's time should not be a drawback at all. We should be as open to questioning our own time as we are to questioning Gaskell's. Her story and the struggles of her characters to live up to what they believe does a good job of raising questions that are still pertinent 160 years after she wrote RUTH.
