Discerning collectors, take note: though the titles are similar, this compilation is not the same CD as the 18-track 1996 anthology on Ichiban titled It`s Gonna Take a Miracle: The MGM Sides. This British 2010 release, on the RPM label, is more comprehensive, its 30 songs including everything from their two MGM albums, as well as three non-LP bonus tracks from 1966 singles. The casual soul fan doesn`t miss much by sticking with the shorter 1996 compilation. But for more serious Royalettes fans, this is an admirably complete and well-annotated document of their MGM output, which comprised most of their discography. Though only the title track made much of a commercial impact, their MGM recordings were more consistent than those of many soul artists with higher profiles. It`s true that nothing matches "It`s Gonna Take a Miracle," and that there`s some similarity to much of the material that some fussy specialists might find a little off-putting. But for those who enjoy early soul music with poppier orchestrated production and a greater lingering girl group influence than much of the style boasted, it`s a fine listen, with relatively few mediocre tracks and quite a few good ones. Even the LP-only tracks are largely respectable, and though like many soul acts they turned to some pop standards to fill out one of their albums (1966`s The Elegant Sounds of the Royalettes), they didn`t overdo it. ~ Richie Unterberger
