In 2007 Synergy Entertainment added another entry to the growing list of Roy Rogers albums bearing the title "King of the Cowboys." This 24-track "best-of" collection is a DVD enhanced reissue of an otherwise identical 2005 Hallmark release, which itself was a differently decorated reissue of a 2001 St. Clair collection simply called Roy Rogers. As the same bundle of tracks have been thrown at the feet of the public so many times in succession, one might speculate as to who owns this portion of the Roy Rogers catalog, and what in blazes they think they`re up to. On the level, though, these are good old-fashioned wholesome Hollywood cowboy-flavored tunes, sung by a handsome son of a gun whose lengthy career can best be enjoyed using Rhino`s Happy Trails: The Roy Rogers Collection 1937-1990, a 94-track anthology released in 1999. Short of that, almost any Roy Rogers album with the words "King of the Cowboys" on it will probably sound like this one and should provide easy access to important songs like "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and "Hold That Critter Down." What distinguishes this particular edition from all of the rest is the inclusion of a DVD containing Bells of San Angelo, a 54-minute Republic Western from 1947 starring Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.
