Based on the famous Leopold and Loeb murder case (from which two other films, COMPULSION and SWOON, were also derived), ROPE both challenges and terrifies the audience. Alfred Hitchcock disdained the whodunit crime story, which he felt lacked emotional force, and ROPE shows the director's preference for letting the audience know more than the characters onscreen. The film opens as two young men (Farley Granger and John Dall) strangle a friend just to prove they're intellectually capable of committing the perfect crime. To add to the amusement, they hide the body in a trunk that will serve as the dinner table for a party honoring the deceased. The film hones in on an hour and a half of the party, with the constantly moving camera capturing the changing emotional atmosphere as the guests grow increasingly concerned about the fate of the missing boy. ROPE is a directorial tour de force, blending complex camera movement with intricate staging to present the entire story in near-real time in one location. Notably, the adaptation of the play by Patrick Hamilton was written by perennial Hitchcock actor Hume Cronyn.

    • A Hitchcock Hidden Gem

I first saw "Rope" on Public TV and thought for its era was an amazing study of absolute power corrupting the minds of two young men who commit an atrocious murder of a friend, "just for the thrill of it." Loosely based on the famous Leopold & Loeb true crime murder case that occured in the early 20th Century Chicago, this first technicolor offering by mystery movie director Alfred Hitchcock stars Jimmy Stewart in the unusal role as the ex Prep School Master for these two twisted personalities. Leopold & Loeb were two college students from very wealthy families who kidnapped a young neighbor boy and suffocated him; leaving him abandoned in a gulley in a nearby park. Loeb's eye glasses, of a style that only ten were sold in the greater Chicago area, were left at the disposal scene and were eventually traced back to the murderous pair. Intensive police interviews at a Hotel [taken there because of thier family's wealth and standing in the community] eventually bore the fruit of a confession by Loeb, and the pair were defended by famed trial attorney, Clarence Darrow [the "Scope's Monkey Trial"] who saved them from the death penalty. They were both sentenced to life imprisonment where Leopold died in prison. Loeb was eventually released in the 1970's only to live a secluded and tortured life as a infamous criminal until his death. "Rope's" plot involves a high society dinner party that acts as a celebration of thier nasty deed; and the ultimate revealing by Stewart of thier terrible crime. The background story feature about why, how, and who made this film is facisinating as well, and a nice component of this DVD. A bit dated for today's audiences, it is suitable for anyone over 13, as the violence is short and very tastfully done with a brief 10 second strangulation with the "Rope" This was a sleeper for Hitchcock, and an unusual role for Stewart, but it is well worth the purchase by any murder mysterly buff.
