I watched this movie once as a child, and the songs stuck with me for some reason, so I purchased the movie for nostalgia's sake. There are too many secondary characters who need screen time for their own stories to fully flesh out the heroine, and that makes her come off as a little flat. Likewise, you only get to know Ribaldi from the childrens' point of view. Even so, the movie is a good little break from reality, hitting all those wonderful and familiar Disney notes without actually being a Disney movie. It's actually more Phantom of the Opera meets Beauty and the Beast. You'll roll your eyes at the obliviousness of some characters, grow to love a character who seems detestable, ache with the characters, laugh with (and at) them, and feel the music draw you along to the triumphant climax! In short: it's not an epic, it's not an action movie, and it comes with a little each of whine and cheese. Still, despite its shortcomings, it is a beautiful, heart-touching story, with music anyone can enjoy, and I would recommend watching it at least once. If you are a parent or caretaker of children 5-10, girls in particular, they might well wear out the disk.
