The Girl Who Married a Lion

Author: McCall Smith, Alexander

Description: This collection of traditional folktales from Botswana and Zimbabwe uses magic and talking animals to convey simple but evocative messages about friendship, rivalry, and justly punished treachery. The adaptor of these tales is Alexander McCall Smith, best known for the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency mystery series, whose fictional protagonist is native to Botswana and (as she says in the foreword) might have heard these stories herself when she was growing up.

I bought this to use for a short story unit with my 10th grade English class. The book has about 30 short stories, but they are at times difficult to read. They are written with an African-English syntax (If you've ever heard someone from Africa speak, the way they communicate in English is structured very differently). The stories have great underlying morals, but you might find yourself really having to dig to understand them because they're not explicitly stated like most American tales. As far as Overstock: The book came in 2-3 days from purchase. They're very reliable and anytime there has been issues with an order Overstock has immediately fixed it-no questions asked.
