    RaceLens is a book to be treasured by thoroughbred racing enthusiasts. Using archival photos by skilled photographers (racelensmen), Von Borries takes the reader back to the glory days of the sport of kings. Uncovering historical details about horses, jockeys, trainers, owners, as well as the races they were part of, the author educates, entertains, and amuses us. His thorough research is evident in the gentle humor he shares, along with the circumstances he points out in the vintage photos. The reader is treated to the insights of photographers such as C. C. Cook, Bert Morgan, or “Skeets” Meadors, who artfully recorded thoroughbred history, proof that there is more to horse racing than the Triple Crown. Von Borries writes about the various renewals of Chicago’s American Derby (“America’s race” until Louisville’s Kentucky Derby became prominent) and the little known racetracks that no longer exist. A quote from the book exemplifies Von Borries’ fascination with thoroughbreds: “Take a good look at the picture (photographed by C.C. Cook), because it happened just once. That’s Man o’ War losing for the only time in his twenty-one-race career. That epic defeat was to the ominously named Upset in the August 13, 1919, Sanford Memorial Stakes at Saratoga…”
