I read this book many years ago as a teenager. Someone had to convince me to read it. This was the only book I had ever completed, until two months ago. I never really liked to read, but this book was so interesting.

This was a great book and very easy to read! It was shipped very quickly!

If you are sensitive about certain issues, then this book is not for you. However, the grammar in the book makes sense because the main character, "Precious", is illiterate. So Saphire had to write it in that way to let you know what Precious was going through. Yes, she went through much,(Mental,Physical and sexual abuse); but with the help of a teacher who saw potential in Precious, she was able to overcome much, and in the end triumphed.

This short novel (and the movie Precious upon which it is based) is not for the faint at heart nor the naive! PUSH portrays the impact that poverty can and does have on the lives of countless thousands of young girls. It is intentionally difficult and will make almost any reader terribly uncomfortable--which we should be as we enjoy our perfectly ordered, middle-class lives that we THINK are everyone else's reality. Our book club debated several issues raised in the book including the fact that multiple systems FAILED the main character. Not just government systems but the system that helped most of us make it (neighbors, church, social and civic organizations, schools, etc.) all FAILED. More importantly, it opened the door for some honest conversation about how often abuse happens in households that are NOT impoverished! Underneath it all, the notion that poor, uneducated folk can survive the most unspeakable conditions and change their lives via education, literacy and self-determination, should inspire every reader. Our book club purchased copies via Overstock--brand new, excellent condition at a great price. The real value was reading, reviewing and forcing ourselves to confront realities that we often overlook or try to deny. A must read--even if it IS difficult!

For those that think you are just reading another memoir... and expect it to be all polite and politically correct... this book isnt for you. I have heard a few people state that this book offended them... and they couldnt get past the first few pages. To these few, You are missing the point!!!! It is a REAL life story... with REAL life situations. I thought this book was honest, and triumphant, and an all around good book. I would recommend it to anyone willing to read something eyeopening... and without judgment.

I could only get through a few pages of this book. The language is unreal and racial comments didn't sit well with me. In the description they gave I thought I was getting something different. I wouldn't recommend this book to certain age groups. I'm sending it back as we speak. I'm part of a book club and this would be a big mistake.

I got this book at a reasonable amount of time before i saw the movie since it was in limited theaters. The book is much better than the movie and the movie is the academy award winner since to was better than the 3d blockbuster avatar . This is a definite read!!!

I really enjoyed the writing style of the author.The story is real and heart-wrenching. It is an importantstory. I cried for Precious - I wanted to hug, kiss, and comfort her. I wanted to fix everything for Precious; the hardest part of all was thatI couldn't and no one could.To all the Precious s in the world: I love you!

I thought this book would have drawn me in more, but it was very random and the last half wasn't very good. There wasn't any resolution or real ending. I bought this because I wanted to read it before I saw the movie.

I started to read this book but it is soooo hard to read. I am going to take my time and read it. This story is raw, haunting, graphic, sad, real, and mind-boggling. I feel like issues that are spoken about in the book happen everyday and that is why I will build up some courage and read the book.

This book can be difficult to understand because of the illiteracy of the main character, Precious, but you can still get the message of how incredibly sad this young girls life is. She has been abused in every way and still manages to survive. The book is short & there is now a movie out called "Precious" which is also very good, but the movie leaves out certain parts of the book that I would've liked to see. Nevertheless, read the book first then go see the movie. You should be able to read it in one day. My guarantee is that after you have completed it, you will feel either closely connected because some of these tragedies have happened to you or that some things that have happened to you are really not that bad & things could be quite worse.

I ordered this book when I saw the trailers for the movie inspired by the book. It's a really intense, edgy book. It's written in Precious's language so you feel real and like she is really talking to you. It's not a book for the weak stomached, but it is inspiring and you can't help admiring her courage. I can't wait to see the movie.

This was a great book! The only thing was it was a little difficult to read due to the descritiveness of Precious's abuse.

I wanted to read the book before I went to see the movie. The was a fast and interesting read that I was able to do while I was away on vacation. The book was shipped the same day ordered and I received it in less than one week. I enjoyed reading the book and can't wait to see the movie. This is my first purchase from overstock but I will use overstock again.

I bought this book after hearing about the movie. I read the first chapter online and was hooked so I had to buy it. The book was a little more graphic than I thought but not offensive. I loaned the book to a friend after I finished reading it. I was a little surprised with the ending of the book and looked for a sequel. I am looking forward to watching the movie and hope it has a better ending.
