It's obviously not an "all-inclusive, what-to-expect" kind of pregnancy book, but it addressed a lot of questions that I had when I was pregnant and it was fun to read. I especially enjoyed the monthly fruit comparisons to the size of the baby.

As a healthcare professional myself I found this to be a GREAT pregnancy book of all the do's and don'ts of things you can and can't eat/drink/do during pregnancy. Presented in an easily accessible, easy to understand format and writing style, yet solidly based in scientific evidence. Even provides the reference list of all the research studies the Dr. used to base his information, as well as some other wonderful useful resource lists in the back of the book. If you want a book that not only tells you what you can and can't do, but also explains why this book is for you. I will recommend this book to all my pregnant or soon to be pregnant friends and patients!

If you are looking to read about various women's natural childbirth stories, this is a GREAT book. I worked as a birth doula and loved to share this with clients who were planning a natural birth. It's reassuring to hear how so many other women have succeeded!

I am currently pregnant with my first child, and I wanted to get as much advice as possible about my birthing options. For me, the lack of readily available information about birthing is a real women's issue. It seems like there is so much women don't know about what is going to be done to their bodies, and so many women just accept the procedures without question. I'm just not that kind of lie-back-and-take-it woman. I don't believe that childbirth is always a medical emergency, and I wanted to know how -- considering that everything goes well -- I can have the kind of birth that nature intended. This book was an excellent resource, and the information was presented in a way that was very engaging; I finished it in just a few days, and as soon as I was done, I switched from an OB to a midwife. It wasn't that the book was anti-OB, but it did give me the confidence to step back and realize that I wasn't getting the level of care I wanted and that I needed someone who had a similar point of view as mine. (For example, my OB had told me that I didn't need a birth plan because she would take care of everything, which for some women may have been reassuring, but to me, it felt like my power was being taken away.) "Your Best Birth" presents all of the different birthing options -- with a slant towards choosing natural birth where medically possible. If you are unsure about your birthing options but feel like you need to be a more active participant in the birth of your child, I highly recommend reading "Your Best Birth."

I am very familiar with birthing women, and have recommended this book to many. I have had great feedback! It is reassuring without being paternalistic, it is an easy read without being too basic, and it inspires women to have confidence in their bodies and their ability to give birth. Her information is based in evidence, and her recommendations are tremendously helpful. Ms. Gaskin has been involved in the birth community for many years, and her wisdom and experience shows in this wonderful book.

I bought this book for my husband shortly after we knew we were pregnant. Since it is our first child I stocked up on books and thought it would be fun for him to have one too so he could be informed about the pregnancy. He really enjoyed reading this book. He said it was funny and yet still informative. The only down fall to this book is that it is too short- he's done with it already! We will be passing this book on to other new dads-to-be!

Although the simple act of popping a vitamin will not produce an immediate energy boost, some vitamins help the body more efficiently process food, which can create more energy. The B vitamins are known as energy vitamins. If you consume the right amount of B vitamins, you can experience a boost in your energy levels and improve your overall health. You can get your B vitamins by consuming more meat, beans and potatoes. You can also find B vitamin supplements or choose a multivitamin with a comprehensive variety of B vitamins. Health drinks and energy beverages are also likely to include B vitamins. Production of energy. To understand how B vitamins help the body more efficiently produce energy, take a look at how energy is created. The food you eat is broken down into usable components. Carbohydrates are broken down into sugars, and this is where the body gets most of its energy. The carbohydrates are either used right away or stored in the form of glycogen in the liver or muscles. When the body needs energy, glycogen is released and converted into energy. Vitamin B1. Vitamin B1, also known as thiamine, is essential to the break-down of carbohydrates, alcohols and fat. Cells in the body need thiamine to help store the energy from carbohydrates for later use. In addition, thiamine produces an enzyme that processes carbohydrates. The recommended dosage of vitamin B1 for an adult is between 0.8 milligram and 1.1 milligrams per day. Vitamin B2. Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, is part of the electron transport chain that converts the carbohydrates into energy. The recommended dosage for an adult is between 1.3 milligrams and 1.7 milligrams per day. Vitamin B3. Vitamin B3, or niacin, helps the body with several functions, including digestion and toxin removal. Niacin also helps convert carbohydrates into energy. In addition, niacin creates starch that can be stored for energy later. The recommended dosage for an adult is between 13 milligrams and 19 milligrams per day. Vitamin B6. Vitamin B6, or pyroxidine, is known as the heart-protecting vitamin, and it also boosts energy. Pyroxidine plays a major role in the breakdown of proteins that get turned into energy. Vitamin B6 also helps regulate mood and behavior, which can help you feel more energetic. The recommended dosage for an adult is between 1.6 milligrams and 2 milligrams per day. Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12, also known as cobolamin, is a famous energy vitamin. B12 is required for the production of red blood cells, and it is also necessary for normal cell metabolism. The recommended dosage for adults is 2 micrograms per day. Pregnant women, however, should get 3 micrograms of vitamin B12 per day. Even if you maintain a healthy diet and weight and exercise regularly, you still might not feel as though you are getting the nutrients you need to enjoy and keep up with your lifestyle. Women have specific needs when it comes to vitamins, and those needs can change and increase during adolescence, pregnancy and menopause. Let us help you choose the best vitamins and supplements for your lifestyle. B vitamins. B vitamins are water-soluble, which means they are flushed out daily, so they need to be replenished frequently. B vitamins are abundant in a variety of foods, including meat, potatoes and bananas, but many women, particularly vegetarians, may not find themselves consuming a variety of B vitamin-rich foods. Water-soluble vitamins are also compromised when foods are over-processed or stale. B vitamins affect your immune system, metabolism and cell growth, and they have a big impact on your energy levels. Pregnant women should consume extra B vitamins, particularly vitamin B9, which is also known as folic acid. Find your B vitamins together in a B-complex supplement or in a quality multivitamin. Vitamin C. Vitamin C is also water-soluble, so it is important to get plenty each day. Vitamin C is famous for promoting a healthy immune system. In addition, vitamin C is necessary for absorbing iron into the blood. Because women are more likely to develop iron-deficiency anemia, vitamin C is especially important. Vitamin C supplements are available in a range of formulations, and you can also get plenty from food sources. In addition to oranges, vitamin C is abundant in oysters, broccoli and a wide variety of fruits. Vitamin D. Vitamin D contributes to the overall health of your body's organs, but its main job is to make sure that the calcium you work so hard to consume gets absorbed properly. Women are more likely to develop bone density complications, so calcium and vitamin D are extremely important for women of all ages. You can get your vitamin D easily from the sun, but if your lifestyle doesn't allow for much sun exposure, you may want to consider adding a vitamin D supplement to your routine. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means it is stored in the body's fat and organs. There is some potential for toxicity when fat-soluble vitamins are over-supplemented. A daily intake of 200 to 400 IU per day is recommended for children and adults, and most vitamin D supplements will provide 400 IU per dose. More than 400 IU per day is not recommended.
