Unrivaled storytelling. Unforgettable characters. Rich historical detail. These are the hallmarks of Diana Gabaldon’s work. HerNew York Times bestselling Outlander novels have earned the praise of critics and captured the hearts of millions of fans. Here is the story that started it all, introducing two remarkable characters, Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser, in a spellbinding novel of passion and history that combines exhilarating adventure with a love story for the ages.

The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life, and shatter her heart. For here James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire—and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

    • Engaging and pure escapism!

I have always been intrigued by time travel books and movies and had recently seen "Time Traveler's Wife," so this seemed like something I would enjoy. When I opened the book, I was a but intimidated by its size, but from page one, I was thoroughly engaged, intrigued and entertained. Gabaldon's style is descriptive, crisp and real. I love her characters, their witty and authentic dialogue and her ability to take the reader to another century. Claire and Jamie (picture Kevin McKidd from "Rome" and "Journeyman") will inspire you by their heroics and have you pining for their epic love. Most importantly, however, I am hooked. I'm on to the second in the series: "Dragonfly in Amber" which is just as compelling. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys sci fi, history and engaging story telling. Escape with Outlander--I did!

    • Outlander

This book was recommended to me by several people but I was somewhat skeptical since it kind of sounded like a romance novel and I'm not a fan of "romance" novels. But I'm not sure I would classify this as a romance novel. It's part history, part mystery -- very well researched and written. I've always been fascinated by the concept of time travel and appreciate different approaches to the explanation of how it is achieved -- HG Wells "The Time Machine", Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour in "Somewhere in Time" and of course "Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger. Needless to say, great read -- got me hooked on the continuing saga of Jaimie and Claire.

    • My favorite book

Outlander is the first in a series (now 6, reportedly to be 8) book by Diana Gabaldon. It introduces Claire Randall, a 20th century woman who accidentally steps through a circle of "standing stones" and is transported back to 1743, where she meets the love of her life, Jamie Fraser. The love story will appeal to fans of romance, but know that this is more than just a "romance" novel. The book is rich with history, including graphic descriptions of 18th century life. Any fan of historical fiction will love it.
