The film SAVE THE LAST DANCE features Julia Stiles as a young girl with dreams of dancing school and a love of ballet. When she meets a young man from the other side of the tracks, she discovers hip-hop and an entirely different style of dance. The freshness she feels in that sense of discovery is evoked by the cuts on the film`s soundtrack, which sparkle with a cross-cultural appeal that mixes rap, R&B, and pop. The film`s theme song is a perfect example of this cross-pollenization, as we hear interpolations of the chorus from Cyndi Lauper`s "True Colors" set against an R&B track full of hip-hop beats. Rappers Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, and Mack 10 (among others) help to add street credibility to the album, but there`s no lack of melodic pop appeal either.
