The blues- and gospel-flavored music superbly captures the plot`s emotional upheavals, the arrangements sparkle, and the singing is uniformly excellent.

I saw The Color Purple during its limited engagement as part of the Broadway in Chicago series. The music is upbeat and lively, with some heartfelt ballads as well.
In the Chicago play, Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child played the role of Shug Avery (and did an OUTSTANDING JOB), and I was a little sad to discover that she doesn't appear on this recording. However, original cast member, Elisabeth Withers-Mendes, interpretation of Shug is strong , soulful, and satisfying.
I had an opportunity to buy the CD in the auditorium lobby, but I waited until I got home and bought it on Overstock for about $10 less.
Because of the adult themes and subject matter, I would not recommend for children.
