This novel intriguingly rewrites an actual historical event. In 1854, a Cheyenne chief requested that the U.S. Army provide a thousand white brides for the young warriors in his tribe. The U.S., of course, refused, but Fergus considers what might have happened if a Brides for Indians program had been instituted. One of the brides is a volunteer, a woman who was about to be institutionalized by her family for an unfortunate love affair, and the novel is primarily her story, as she must choose between an Indian chief and a U.S. Army captain.

This is a terrific read under the catagory "what if." Almost reads like a actual historical account of one woman's journey as a bride to Indians to improve the relationship between whites and indians. This book arrived promptly and in wonderful condition.
This book is a great look into a world that many know little about. Highly entertaining and well written. I had a hard time putting this down.
This beautifully written book is filled with historic details that remind us of the Native American's plight . The story revolves around a chief that foresaw the white mans never ending occupation of his land and tried in vain to find a way of living peacefully together as equals. I have recommended this book to several of my friends, all avid readers (like myself) and they too feel that this book is definitely worth reading and passing on!
I looked with eager anticipation for this book to arrive in the mail. I immediately began to read it...and I did manage to finish it...but I am sorry I did. The concept of such a transaction between the US Goverment and the Indians was fascinating in origin and I thought this book would be very entertaining...but BOY WAS I WRONG. The book was vulgar, the story line was dull and stagnated and went nowhere in a hurry. But my biggest complaint was the constant barrage of inappropriate innuendos and bad language. The story could have been told without the words you find on the bathroom walls in public restrooms. Don't waste your money...this one is better off as firewood than reading material!
Ran through this book. Great story line, fabulous characters. It was very evident that the author did a lot of research into the social customs of the times, the landscapes, lifestyles. I highly recommend this fascinating read. It was hard to believe that the United States actually thought this premise might work back in 1835. the storyline gives a view from both sides of the coin.
