Growing more mushrooms may be the best thing we can do to save the environment, and mushroom expert Paul Stamets explains how in this groundbreaking manual. The science goes like this: fine filaments of cells called mycelium, the fruit of which are mushrooms, already cover large areas of land around the world. As the mycelium grows, it breaks down plant and animal debris, recycling carbon, nitrogen, and other elements in the creation of rich new soil. What Stamets shows is that the enzymes and acids thatmycelium produces to decompose this debris are superb at breaking apart hydrocarbons--the base of many pollutants. Stamets discusses the various branches of this exciting new technology, including mycorestoration (biotransforming stripped land), mycofiltration (creating habitat buffers), myco-remediation (healing chemically harmed environments), and mycoforestry (creating truly sustainable forests)--From publisher description.

I love mushrooms... learning about them, hunting them, trying to grow them. This book has so much great information in it! Paul Stamets is on the bleeding edge of myco-technology and the use of fungi to clean up toxic waste etc. All that information is wonderful, but the information on how to propagate mushrooms is invaluable. And the book was a great price! I've been devouring it -- over and over -- since it arrived.
This book arrived on time (between 5 and 14 business days), as expected. I didn't notice anything particularly speedy about the delivery. The packaging was adequate. What was great about this purchase was: 1) the book arrived as expected, 2) it is in great condition, 3) I employed the gift address option... and it worked! 4) it was the least expensive of all options (shipping included), 5) it's packed full of useful and interesting information; it would make a great textbook (a must-read for all mycophiles), and... 6) my boyfriend loves it! Thank you for making this gift possible.
This book was a pretty interesting read and touched on a lot of possibilities, techniques and ideas pertaining to the use of fungal mycelia as an invaluable tool when applied to permaculture. Definitely worth taking a look at if you're interested in personal or large-scale sustainability. If you're looking for a book on cultivating mushrooms, this is not really it. Although it does touch on it a bit here and there, I would highly recommend Stamet's other book: The Mushroom Cultivator instead.
