To be blunt about it, Zelig is an excellent film. Zelig is a fake documentary about a man who lived in the early part of the twentieth century who had an uncanny ability to attain the form of any man he came in contact with. If he were speaking with a large, rotund man, Leonard Zelig would blow up like a balloon; if he were speaking with an man of African decent, the color of his face would change. Of course the scientific community is baffled by this odd man and his many more stifling transformations -- when talking with a psychologist, he assumes the demeanor and intellect of a psychologist. So he is placed under the watchful eyes of many psychoanalysts in a hospital in New York in order to find out the reasoning behind this absurd condition. Soon after this a lovely doctor of the psychotic arts, played by Mia Farrow, takes over the Zelig case and he and she are taken to a home hidden away from the rest of society to begin Mr. Zelig's rehabilitation. This movie has often been summarized as a comedic work which, in a way, I understand how that might be an acceptable estimation. But really this film tries to achieve something greater than to simply be a comedic venture. It is a probing yet, even though in some places, absurdest look at the illnesses and inabilities of us all to make waves of acceptance within our own sphere of influence. This has been the trademark of Allen's work in his early to mid years of film making and in no better place does he expound upon the inadequacies of man than here in this film. This is truly a film to be watched, dissected and enjoyed for all time.
