In the first half of the 1930s, the trio known by a variety of names, but mostly as the Mississippi Sheiks, recorded a generous number of tracks, about a quarter of which are included here. Prime practitioners of the "string band" style that featured fiddle and banjo alongside guitar, and mixed folk, blues, country, and pop in equal amounts, the Sheiks were capable of everything from uproarious, down-and-dirty tunes ("Please Don`t Wake It Up") to harsh, penetrating narratives ("I`ve Got Blood in My Eyes for You," one of two Sheiks cuts covered by Bob Dylan on his WORLD GONE WRONG album). With sharp instrumental prowess and an ability to jump into any style with verve, they were the veritable toast of the town in their day. The full breadth of their repertoire can be experienced on this disc, which has notably few overlapping tunes with the other single-disc SHEIKS compilation, 1992`s STOP AND LISTEN.
