PANTHALASSA, named for the Earth-encompassing ocean of the Pangaea myth, mixes source tapes of ten Davis originals into four soundscapes that drift in and out of musical coherence, perfectly encapsulating the indescribable sounds Miles and his bands were coming up with. Laswell cuts and pastes the trumpeter`s electric swing, Ellingtonian grooves and mountainous raptures of sound, tastefully using atmospheric keyboards as transitions, never stepping on the toes of the original compositions. And while the value of editing these colossal works into easily digestible pieces is somewhat akin to Cliff Notes of James Joyce novels, PANTHALASSA is a gourmet sample of Davis` extraordinary platters.
