France’s beleaguered queen, Marie Antoinette, wrongly accused of uttering the infamous “Let them eat cake,” was the subject of ridicule and curiosity even before her death; she has since been the object of debate and speculation and the fascination so often accorded tragic figures in history. Married in mere girlhood, this essentially lighthearted, privileged, but otherwise unremarkable child was thrust into an unparalleled time and place, and was commanded by circumstance to play a significant role in history. Antonia Fraser’s lavish and engaging portrait of Marie Antoinette, one of the most recognizable women in European history, excites compassion and regard for all aspects of her subject, immersing the reader not only in the coming-of-age of a graceful woman, but also in the unraveling of an era.

Antonia Fraser is the author of Mary Queen of Scots, The Six Wives of Henry VIII, and Faith and Treason, among others. She is also famous for her Jemima Shore series of mysteries. She and her husband, Harold Pinter, live in London.

Excellent! Extremely insightful and entertaining. Abondantly rich in details. Another Antonia Fraser masterpiece. I enjoyed it as much as I did Love and Louis XIV, also by this author.

  • Marie Antoinette: The Journey by Antonia Fraser

I have recently taken interest in former Queen of France, Marie Antoinette. I had studied her in school and thought her life was very interesting from what I learned, and decided to further my knowledge of her. Although history is certainly not one of my best subjects, Antonia Fraser's book made everything so simple and easy to understand. There was no difficult diction to comprehend and everything was so precise. Since I have bought it, I can't put it down! There were so many pieces of information I didn't know about Marie Antoinette, and this book was great in educating me; it even had lovely pictures inside of important people and events in Marie's life. I thoroughly recommend this book 100%. From now on if I take any more interest in historical figures, I know to look for biographies by Antonia Fraser!
