The 36 tracks spanning the two discs and 12 years on Fremeaux & Associes` 1938-1950 collection of Louis Jordan performances is a great way to ease into the legendary saxophonist`s prolific output. What is a little strange about this set is that it highlights only the first 12 years of the 16 Jordan spent on Decca Records; the last four years go unaccounted for, but to be fair, Fremeaux & Associes advertised nothing short of what they delivered on the album cover. There is no promise of an overview of Jordan`s Decca years, just the dates 1938-1950. Many of Jordan`s standbys are here, from the rollicking "Salt Pork, West Virginia" to the amusing "I`m Going to Move to the Outskirts of Town," the classic "Is You Is or Is You Ain`t My Baby," and even a glimpse of his output with Ella Fitzgerald via "Petootie Pie." ~ Gregory McIntosh
