Between 1972 and 1973, Loggins And Messina were on a roll. They released a trio of hugely successful records, culminating in the platinum FULL SAIL, which became the group`s biggest seller. Much of the group`s most memorable work was born of this first burst of creativity. After FULL SAIL, their records began to show the strain of success, which hastened their eventual break-up.
The wide stylistic territory covered in these songs embodies the many musical styles that Loggins And Messina seemed to effortlessly combine into their work. Over their six-album career, they returned to the `50s-style bubblegum of "Your Mama Don`t Dance" and "My Music," as well as the aching balladry of "Danny`s Song." They would also go further in the direction of the sophisticated jazz-pop of "Angry Eyes." Elsewhere, the Calypso-flavored "Vahevela" stands out as a gem in the group`s catalog. Twice per record they stretched out on Jim Messina`s extended, medley-style compositions. The medley on SITTIN` IN, which finishes with "Peace of Mind," is arguably the best of these wonderfully constructed musical trilogies.
