Nominated for 4 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima tells the untold story of the Japanese soldiers who defended their homeland against invading American forces during World War II. With little defense other than sheer will and the volcanic rock of Iwo Jima itself, the unprecedented tactics of General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (Ken Watanabe, The Last Samurai) and his men transform what was predicted to be a swift defeat into nearly 40 days of heroic and resourceful combat. Their sacrifices, struggles, courage and compassion live on in the taut, gripping film Rolling Stone calls "unique and unforgettable." It is the powerful companion piece to Flags of Our Fathers.

This is an awesome movie. A must see for WWII buffs. I like that Clint shows us the other side of the coin. We have always had movies that are only told from our side of the war. This was an eye opener, as we have the same issues on both sides. Neither side benefited from a war. All ages should watch, but only those that could understand the message of the movie. Too young would probably not be a good idea. Have recommended to friends.

After reading Flyboys, this movie made more sense as to the blind allegiance to the emperor. A very well done movie.

A FIVE STAR FILM (R-RATED) THAT WILL BRING YOU CLOSER TO THE HORRORS OF WAR THAN YOU MAY EXPECT. AFTER A SHORT TIME YOU FORGET YOU ARE READING SUBTITLES AND REALLY GET INTO THE ACTION. CLINT EASTWOOD HAS PROVEN HIS ABILITY IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE VIEW IT AS A DOUBLE FEATURE WITH "FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS" FOR A REAL CONTRAST.

I thought the film was well made giving I believe a true picture of war. The language was not suitable at times for younger people . In real combat, it was much worse. I wonder if it would discourage some men from joining the service? I liked it very much. Showing the terrain in which they fought also was good.
