Kottonmouth Kings: D-Loc, Johnny Richter, Daddy X, Pakelika, Tax Man, Lou Dog, DJ Bobby B. Recorded at The Jungle Room, Burbank, California; Electric Ghetto Studios, Venice Beach, California; Jim Henson Studios, Hollywood, California. Personnel: Doug Carrion (guitar); Byron McMackin (drums); John "BJ John" Smith (percussion); DJ Bobby B (scratches). Audio Mixers: Chris Lord-Alge; Patrick Shevelin. Unknown Contributor Roles: Daddy X; D-Loc. Kottonmouth Kings` agenda is nothing if not single-minded. In their world, wholesale legalization of marijuana is, as Peter Tosh once put it, a must. And with ROLLIN` STONED, their fourth official full-length, there`s no way they can be accused of not staying on-message. These Orange County, California dope fiends play a fully evolved mix of rap and hardcore with such no-brainer titles as "4-2-0" and "Light It Up." But their stoner aesthetic belies a savvy approach to both production and performance--there`s no Grateful Dead-style excessive instrumental frippery in evidence here. "Sleepers," with its Turkish Casbah ambience and triumphal told-you-so message to all the band`s haters, both comes straight to the point and serves as potted band history for those who`ve been tardy tuning in. And as if to prove they`re not just concrete-brained Cali hardcore stoners, there`s the almost pastoral "Positive Vibes," a gently swaying gem to beguile the unwary before it morphs into some Jamaican-style toasting and the dynamic hardcore So-Cal two-step of "Zero Tolerance." With STONED the Kings give a cursory nod to both West Coast rap and Dave Matthews Band-style stoner rock before heading off into their own unique tangerine-colored sunset.
