- Description:
- Personnel: Jack DeJohnette (drums, percussion); Michael Cain (piano); Jerome Harris (electric guitar, bass); Don Alias (percussion).
Recorded at Right Track Recording Studios, New York, New York in January 1997.
Jack DeJohnette is back on ECM and all`s right with the world. This time around he is joined by Don Alias playing lots of decidedly Latin percussion instruments, and yet the music doesn`t sound at all Latin. The rhythms have been extracted from that tradition and placed against producer Manfred Eicher`s icy, nighttime skyline, DeJohnette`s tapping ride cymbal defining the placement of the stars. DeJohnette`s early free jazz days in Chicago continue to inform his music and keep it suprising and mysterious.
The song forms on this album allow for plenty of improvisation and much of the entertainment comes from listening to how each musician responds to the ideas suggested to him. In the latter stages of "Priestesses of the Mist," the metallic connection between piano strings and cymbals is explored in a rhythmic improvisation, and in "Free Above the Sea" one is reminded of Japanese Kabuki by the isolated woodblock and plucked strings. In "From the Heart," DeJohnette`s fascinating baroque cymbal work can be heard adorning the main body of the piece until, for a brief moment, the band breaks into a full-fledged swinging section.
