An interesting read and sad story.
from Little Rock, AR,  Dec 11, 2007

I suppose this book has been reviewed thousands of times since Sean Penn decided to make a film of the story. Haven't seen the movie. I read the book years ago and gave this recent copy to a friend who HAD seen the film. I remember that the book left me with a sense of desolation and waste. The young man had heroic ambitions and an idealism that disdained practical considerations -- such as having a map -- that ultimately led to his slow death from poisoning. I'm not sure that his quest was admirable, or worthy of a book and film. He indulged in one of those misguided and reckless efforts to discover who he was, and those quests almost always come to unfortunate endings.

Being drawn "Into The Wild"
from Littleton, CO,  Nov 8, 2007

I recently saw the movie directed by Sean Penn and remembered reading the book a few years ago having loaned it from a friend. She claimed it as one of her favorite books. For me the movie brought up so many memories from the book, but I personally couldn't remember them as well. After viewing the movie I jumped right online to find that Overstock was the cheapest price I could find. Not only that but in perfect condition, Brand New! Once I received my package in the mail I started reading. This book draws you into the life of Chris McCandless told very eloquently through author Jon Krakauer. Jon took a year or so of researching people Chris hitchhiked with, ran into, or worked with and basically drew a two year "journey line" from A to B. Point B being Alaska where Chris would finally fulfill his dream of living in and off of the wild. His passion is inspiring, his struggles heartfelt and his story all-to familiar symbolically for many of us. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to reach out of their bubble. We don't all need to move to Alaska with nothing to our name, but maybe we can change something in our everyday lives that will help us look beyond our dull exteriors. My first change was buying this book. I look forward to where that takes me!

Great Book!
from Albany, Georgia,  Dec 4, 2011

This is a great read for another who enjoys the outdoors, traveling, or otherwise. I have read this book many times, and bought many copies because I have lent them to family and friends to never get them back.

Could be better
from Oahu, HI,  Oct 19, 2011

After I read this book, I had to re-read it. Not for its plethora of information or the descriptive scenes. I re-read it to see if the grammar errors and bad wording were in my head, or if they were actually printed in the book. The book isn't well written, and the information about McCandless' death is based on opinion rather than fact. When I looked into the book a little more, I saw that they had to re-release the book because parts of the first edition were scientifically proved wrong. Even in the latest edition, one specific part has been questioned many times and even discredited. Even though the book had many errors, it wasn't bad enough to the point where I put it down, or threw it across the room. A few parts of the book were well written and illustrative. I'm glad they included some of McCandless' journal and interviews from people who knew him. It made McCandless seem real to me. The book is emotional, interesting, and exciting at certain times, but the fact that the author based McCandless' death on assumption and called it a fact, really brings its value down for me.

this is a fascinating book of the true story of a foolish young man who thought he could find the meaning of life by throwing away his. his misbegotten adventures end with his sojourn in to the alaskan wild fore which he was woefully unprepared. the writing by jon krakrauer is intense, informed and insightful. it abounds with lessons and metaphors for our own lives.....read it.

Well Worth the Time!
from Rockford, IL,  Oct 24, 2007

This is a great book! It was totally reasonable, too! I wanted to read the book before the movie comes out. Jon Krakauer does an amazing job of capturing the real story and gives you enough information for you to determine your own opinion. It was well written and strung accordingly.

Great book, great price
from Panama City, Fl,  Aug 9, 2007

This is a great book that I would recoomend to anyone who is a fan of the outdoors. While perhaps misguided, McCandless was well intentioned, and this is truly a touching story.
