Reviewing the first edition of this excellent guide in 1997, Reference & Research Book News wrote: "The author makes a rich landscape richer with his knowledge of botany, history, wildlife biology, and anthropology, and his thumbnail tales of colorful, goldrush era characters like Skookum Jim, Tagish Charlie, and the Mad Trapper of the Yukon. He also includes stories of the native peoples, abandoned mining camps, massive glaciers, expanses of alpine tundra, and enlightening explanations of pingoes, eskers, and suspect terranes." All still true. The updated edition contains 31 driving itineraries, each with a clear full-page map delineating the route, which range in length from a few hours to several days. B&w photos are included. Annotation ©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
