This excellent two-disc compilation is a testament to Ike Turner`s legacy as a rock-&-roll and R&B pioneer. Although the incendiary "Rocket 88," recorded for Sun Studios and sometimes heralded at the first true rock-&-roll recording, is absent here, CLASSIC EARLY SIDES charts Turner`s dynamic early work as both a leader ("You`re Driving Me Insane") and a sideman ("Baby Please"). The music, which draws on jump blues, urban blues, and proto-rock and soul, bursts at the seams with vital energy, not least because of Turner`s sharp arrangements, bandleading skills, and way around the piano and guitar. This comes recommended for any fan of `50s rock and R&B.
