Reza Aslan cogently re-analyzes America`s war on terror as a "cosmic war," meaning that the conflict is based on ethereal notions of religion and morality, rather than tangible properties, territory, or people. The other defining characteristic of a cosmic war, as defined by Aslan, is that it is inherently unwinnable, seemingly undermining the title of his book. Aslan argues that religion, particularly the ideology of modern Islam, is embedded in the politics and culture of its followers, and that any attack against it necessarily strengthens their resolve. Thus, as Aslan shows, the only way to win a cosmic war is to refuse to participate, and to focus instead on opening new avenues of political agency and communication for alienated Muslim leaders.
