      I got this for my recently widowed father in law who was living on beans and rice while trying to teach himself to cook. It's written by a man and is very clear and straightforward. Terms are described, most ingredients used are easy to find (even in a small town population 88). The recipes are easy and as skills improve, there are recipes that are more complex. I should be clear, it is written like a regular cookbook, is not arranged from simple to complex. I meant that the book is great for beginners as well as experienced cooks. It really is a more friendly version of "Joy of Cooking"....

      A practical guide to cooking, well, everything! Unlike Joy of Cooking (which I also own), this book is less complicated and boils down basic cooking techniques to their essence. It is inspiring to use because of its elegant simplicity - in the first week I made homemade mayonnaise and fresh shortcake biscuits, 2 items I had never tried. This book focuses on making the basics accessible and encourages the reader to expand beyond that. Great addition.

      I love to cook and I collect cookbooks. This cookbook is really nice. It really does tell you how to cook everything and it does it in a level anyone can understand. I liked it so much I am giving it as a gift this year. It is a great cookbook for someone just starting out or someone who has cooked for years!
