Praise for How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman:

"In his introduction to How to Cook Everything, Mark Bittman says, 'Anyone can cook, and most everyone should.' Now, hopefully everyone will -- this work is a rare achievement. Mark is in that pantheon of a few gifted cook/writers who make very, very good food simple and accessible. I read his recipes and my mouth waters. I read his directions and head for the kitchen. Bravo, Mark, for taking us away from take-out and back to the fun of food."
-- Lynne Rossetto Kasper, host of the international public radio show "The Splendid Table with Lynne Rossetto Kasper"

"Mark Bittman is the best home cook I know, and How to Cook Everything is the best basic cookbook I've seen."
-- Jean-Georges Vongerichten, award-winning chef/owner of Jean-Georges

"Useful to the novice cook or the professional chef, How to Cook Everything is a tour de force cookbook by Mark Bittman. Mark lends his considerable knowledge and clear, concise writing style to explanations of techniques and quick, classic recipes. This is a complete, reliable cookbook."
-- Jacques Pepin, chef, cookbook author, and host of his own PBS television series

"Sometimes all the things that a particular person does best come together in a burst of synergy, and the result is truly marvelous. This book is just such an instance. Mark Bittman is not only the best home cook we know, he is also a born teacher, a gifted writer,...

MARK BITTMAN writes the popular weekly "Minimalist" column for the New York Times. His other books include The Best Recipes in the World and Fish: The Complete Guide to Buying and Cooking. He also hosts the public television cooking series How to Cook Everything: Bittman Takes on America's Chefs.

  • Excellent Book

I love to cook and I collect cookbooks. This cookbook is really nice. It really does tell you how to cook everything and it does it in a level anyone can understand. I liked it so much I am giving it as a gift this year. It is a great cookbook for someone just starting out or someone who has cooked for years!

  • Great Cookbook

I used to rely on the Joy of Cooking as my basic cookbook, but for anyone who is a practiced cook to a newbie to the world of cooking, this is a great resource. I've actually purchased it for my 22 year old nephew who is out on his own for the first time.

  • great book

I got this for my recently widowed father in law who was living on beans and rice while trying to teach himself to cook. It's written by a man and is very clear and straightforward. Terms are described, most ingredients used are easy to find (even in a small town population 88). The recipes are easy and as skills improve, there are recipes that are more complex. I should be clear, it is written like a regular cookbook, is not arranged from simple to complex. I meant that the book is great for beginners as well as experienced cooks. It really is a more friendly version of "Joy of Cooking"....

  • nice book

A practical guide to cooking, well, everything! Unlike Joy of Cooking (which I also own), this book is less complicated and boils down basic cooking techniques to their essence. It is inspiring to use because of its elegant simplicity - in the first week I made homemade mayonnaise and fresh shortcake biscuits, 2 items I had never tried. This book focuses on making the basics accessible and encourages the reader to expand beyond that. Great addition.
