Published in 40 countries, Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy – The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass – has graced the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, Book Sense, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists.

The Golden Compass
forms the first part of a story in three volumes. The first volume is set in a world like ours, but different in many ways. The second volume is set partly in the world we know. The third moves between many worlds.

In The Golden Compass, readers meet 11-year-old Lyra Belacqua, a precocious orphan growing up within the precincts of Jordan College in Oxford, England. It quickly becomes clear that Lyra's Oxford is not precisely like our own—nor is her world. In Lyra's world, everyone has a personal dæmon, a lifelong animal familiar. This is a world in which science, theology and magic are closely intertwined.

The Subtle Knife is the second part of the trilogy that began with The Golden Compass. That first book was set in a world like ours, but different. This book begins in our own world.

In The Subtle Knife, readers are introduced to Will Parry, a young boy living in modern-day Oxford, England. Will is only twelve years old, but he bears the responsibilities of an adult. Following the disappearance of his explorer-father, John Parry, during an expedition in the North, Will became parent, provider and protector to his frail, confused mother. And it's in protecting her that he becomes a murderer, too: he accidentally kills a man who breaks into their home to steal valuable letters written by John Parry. After placing his mother in the care of a kind friend, Will takes those letters and sets off to discover the truth about his father.

The Amber Spyglass
brings the intrigue of The Golden Compass and The Subtle...

  • Great Deal

I received this beautiful set two days after placing my order--paying less than $1 for shipping! These have the original covers--the only movie tie-in is a small gold medallion on each cover promoting the movie (don't try to remove it like I did, as I sadly made a small tear in doing so) AND the set includes a standalone map of Lyra's Oxford. The books themselves are the best things I've read in the past decade. I bought the set so I could reread them and admire them on my bookshelf.

  • His Dark Material Hardcover Boxed Set

This box set is very nice. I believe the dust cover artwork is the same as the original book release. The only difference is the added movie announcement. The price was the best around when you take into account shipping and any taxes. The story was entertaining, but it also won't be too memorable for me. Other younger reader books turned movies had better stories, in my opinion. The religious themes are there, but it will not convince people to renounce their beliefs, young or old. I would still recommend!!

  • Great series

This set of books has done what Harry Potter could not, they peeked my 13 year old son's interests in reading. He read the first book last fall in anticipation of the movie. He never read for enjoyment until this book. But after only a chapter of two, I had to tell him to put the book down and go to bed. I don't care what anyone has to say about the politics or religion of the author. Any book that can get my ADHD child to concentrate long enough to read 30-40 pages a day, has my vote. This is why I bought him the hardcover set for Christmas. Since then he is nearly finished the Subtle Knife. Great job and a great series.

  • Very Much Worth Reading

A family member purchased these beautiful editions from Overstock because the price for the hardbacks are the same as soft-cover books at local bookstores. I am so glad he did! I look forward to sharing this rich and thoughtful series with my own children. Far too complex to narrow into a few themes, the stories of the Golden Compass takes the reader into a wonderful fantasy world where children are the hero and heroine. Lyra and Will are multi-dimensional and truly grow throughout the series. It is a coming-of-age story with unique thoughts about religion, science and free-will. What makes The Golden Compass and its' companions worth reading is the lack of black and white and good versus evil allowing the reader to make his/her own decisions about the themes. I highly recommend these books for any young adult who is curious about the universe and able to handle a world view that may be different from his/her own.
