The Best of Helen O`Connell on Capitol covers less than three years in the career of Helen O`Connell, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra vocalist who rivalled Anita O`Day as one of the most powerful female singers of the swing era. Her period with Capitol covered the early `50s and included only a few hits -- her trad versions of "Would I Love You (Love You, Love You)" and "Slow Poke" did best of all, but her two uproarious duets with Gisele MacKenzie ("Water Can`t Quench the Fire of Love" and "Lipstick-A-Powder-`N-Paint") made the Hit Parade, as well. Also included on this 24-track compilation are several duets with Bob Eberly plus Dean Martin ("We Never Talk Much") and Tennessee Ernie Ford ("Hey, Good Lookin`"). It`s a tragedy that there`s so little competition for the title of best Helen O`Connell compilation, but this is it -- and will likely remain so for awhile. ~ John Bush
