The multi-limbed Gus Gus family includes a number of performance artists, singers, instrumentalists and sound designers pounding out big band electronica. Easily one of the more original acts on the 4AD label--no mere Cocteau Twin wannabes them--Gus Gus incorporates elements as disparate as Broadway kitsch, galloping electronic squiggle effects, diva vocals, Middle Eastern percussion, and contemporary dance beats.
"Gun" wrestles with a number of these influences. Bouncing bass sequencers sustain a chugging locomotive of sultry female vocals, exotic hand-struck percussion, and spacey electronics. "Barry" is an elegiac trip-hop fantasy that puts Portishead to shame, such is the cinematic scope of breathy voices and disco swagger. Gus Gus prove that maximalism can work in this day and age, provided that it`s pulled off with the verve found on POLYDISTORTION.
