Description:
Audio Mixer: Nick Launay. Recording information: Assault & Battery (2009); State Of The Art (2009). Photographer: Polly Borland. When Nick Cave put the Bad Seeds on temporary hiatus, he formed Grinderman with Warren Ellis, Jim Sclavunos, and Martyn Casey -- all members of his primary outfit. They were the mirror image of the Bad Seeds: irreverent, hard rocking, and just plain fun. They issued their self-titled debut album, a crunchy, howling slab of grit, grime, sleazy humor, swampy shambolic blues, and high-octane garage band energy. Grinderman 2 is another step in that direction, albeit a bit further afield. Cave's songwriting goes further into the blackly humorous -- note titles such as "Mickey Mouse and the Goodbye Man" and "Worm Tamer" to name just two -- and the band's sound evolves. All the original trademarks are there: the cacophonous piano, howling guitars and electric mandolins, sawing violins, low-end basslines, and cracking, clamorous beats, rooted in basic roar and roll. That said, these songs travel to the fringes as well; there is more improvisation, more willingness to let a tune come close to falling apart before pasting it back together. This is what some would call a more "experimental" record, though it is no less enjoyable, and far more fierce in the death-rattling whomp that Grinderman's debut merely hinted at.

Editorial Reviews:
Spin - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "THROUGHOUT GRINDERMAN 2, the guitars and violins pant and howl with a visceral, veteran's swagger. Late middle age has never sounded so thrilling." Alternative Press (p.113) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Cave displays a delicate balance of teetering psychosis..." CMJ - "Cave's noisy, dentist-drill guitar work is still prominently featured, but occasionally it takes on pedal-warped psychedelic tones as the songs stretch out beyond the band's typical garage-rock template..." CMJ - "Cave's noisy, dentist-drill guitar work is still prominently featured, but occasionally it takes on pedal-warped psychedelic tones as the songs stretch out beyond the band's typical garage-rock template..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.91) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Cave's take on the blues is to explore its heartbreak and neuroses as well as its braggadocio. Which gives plenty of scope for dark humour." Mojo (Publisher) (p.56) - Ranked #20 in Mojo's "The 50 Best Albums Of 2010" -- "Noisy, yes, but tender in it own way." Paste (magazine) - "The ragged nine-track album rages with songs that build from taut guitar jams to full-blown tantrums." Pitchfork (Website) - "Like much of Cave's work, there is an ominous sense of dread always creeping. But unlike previous work, there's a speed and intensity to GRINDERMAN 2 unheard before." Record Collector (magazine) (p.82) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "'Evil' provides the album's most extreme maelstrom, a monolith of coruscating guitars and shouting blokes..." Uncut (magazine) (p.86) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The blues remain a touchstone...but GRINDERMAN 2 prefers to prowl rock's perimeter with Amon Duul II, Suicide and contemporary drone practitioners like Wooden Shjips." Uncut (magazine) (p.36) - Ranked #10 in Uncut's "The 50 Best Albums of 2010" -- "[The album] suggested Nick Cave took this terrifically rackety outfit just as seriously as his other work..."
