"Sco-Mule" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
When Gov`t Mule bassist Allen Woody died of undetermined causes in August 2000, friends and fellow founding members Warren Haynes and Matt Abts were unsure whether to proceed with the Mule or not. Determined to honor their late friend`s memory, the duo came up with the idea of having their favorite bass players step in for a song or two. An astounding range of bassists answered the call and the result is the far-flung 2-CD set THE DEEP END, VOL.1.
Jack Bruce appears on the Cream-like dirge "Fool`s Moon," while funkateers Flea and Larry Graham respectively slap and pop on "Down And Out In New York City" and the Band Of Gypsys-flavored "Life On The Outside". Other memorable moments include the shimmering contributions made by Mike Watt and Jerry Cantrell on CCR`s "Effigy," the gorgeous duet with R&B legend Little Milton on the uplifting "Soulshine," and the jazzy instrumental tango Haynes has with John Scofield on "Sco-Mule." The late Woody himself is represented on a scorching version of Grand Funk`s `Sin`s A Good Man`s Brother" recorded months before his death.
