The Gibson Brothers may not be from the South (they hail from upstate New York), and they may not all be brothers (half of the quartet is a father-son pair), but as RING THE BELL shows, they can turn out some contemporary bluegrass that`s got more roots than most of the group`s hot-pickin` peers. Tunes like "Jericho" and "Just An Old Rounder" show that Eric and Leigh Gibson and Junior and Mike Barber have studied the old bluegrass masters, but then they`re able to take a great, underrated Tom Petty tune like "Angel Dream" and invest it with just as much of that high-lonesome sound, reminding listeners that the true bluegrass spirit comes from inside, not outside.
