Ann Budd is the best-selling author of The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns and The Knitter's Handy Book of Sweater Patterns. She is also the author of Getting Started Knitting Socks, Interweave Presents Knitted Gifts, Knitting Green, and Simple Style, and coauthor of Bag Style, Color Style, Lace Style, and Wrap Style. She is a book editor and the former senior editor of Interweave Knits magazine. She lives in Boulder, Colorado.

From cast-on stitches to binding off, this handbook details the simple steps needed to turn seemingly complicated sock knitting projects into easy and enjoyable activities. Helpful photographs and instructional drawings ensure that even inexperienced knitters will be able to produce high-quality socks and handle more complicated techniques, such as the Kitchener stitch at the toe. Using instructions for five different sizes—from child through adult large—at five different gauges, knitters can produce styles ranging from delicate dress socks to thick and furry slipper socks. More adventurous knitters can add variety and flair by following one of 16 unique designs or trying one of the dozens of rib, cable, and lace patterns provided. With plenty of tips and a handy stitch dictionary, this guide unleashes the creativity and fun of sock knitting.

    • Great book--best for beginning/intermediate

I own quite a few sock knitting books (Vintage Socks; Spinoff Magazine's Sock Book; Knitting on the Road; Favorite Socks; Easy Knitted Socks; Folk Socks; Simple Socks, Plain & Fancy; Anna Zilboorg's books, and many others). I'm always looking for fresh approaches and new ideas. Of all the books I've acquired, this one is the best I've seen so far to get you firmly grounded in the fundamentals of the craft. Straightforward, very well illlustrated, clearly thought out. You'll love the many visuals, as they explain what you truly can't divine through words, or without another knitter at your elbow showing you in person...I use it as much for a reference for the different gauges of sock wools, and how to work them up, as anything else. I like to work from established patterns, but I also like to improvise my own. I seldom use the recommended-by-manufacturer yarn, so I like these lookup guidelines. Recommend this book for sock knitters who are still fairly new to the craft, and want to get it right (or at least, do it more knowledgeably).

    • Ideas not mind blowing

I was hoping for something new and creative in the sock pattern. These are patterns that you can get for free on the internet. The teadching side is very good if you are new to sock makeing. But if you have been on that road before there is little new information.
