tim1968 from Shasta Lake, CA, Rating:5.0This recording of the Mahler Third Symphony emanates from a live, one-take in 1986 with Klaus Tennstedt conducting the London Philharmonic in concert at Royal Albert Hall and it is here released on CD by ICA Classics. Tennstedt established his credentials with a Mahler cycle for EMI but those who have heard both his earlier recording of the Mahler Third and this one prefer this live version. Tennstedt was said to have been on a completely different level artistically when conducting live as opposed to making canned recordings in studio and this recording is electric and spontaneous. The recording, though analogue, is of a high quality. The orchestral playing shows little sign of roughness associated with live performances. The solo singing of Waltraud Meier and the singing of the boys' choir are first rate.
