People Who Viewed This Viewed

Economist Steven Levitt's reality-based view of economics encompasses both how it touches our daily lives and how it can help bring clarity to the messy world we live in. In Freakonomics, written with journalist Stephen J. Dubner, Levitt casts his professorial eye on a range of topics and behaviors, phrasing questions in a way that will open up the topic. The chapter "What Do Schoolteachers and Sumo Wrestlers have In Common?" explores the issue of cheating as an incentive. He examines the economics of crime in a chapter entitled "Why Do Drug Dealers Still Live with Their Moms?" Perhaps he is most controversial when he connects a drop in the crime rate with a rise in abortions. Along the way, Levitt probes, challenges, and delights with facts and figures as he takes us down some less-traveled routes. He remains true to his discipline, and says his approach "employs the best analytical tools that economics can offer." Reading Freakonomics is like being in the classroom of one of those teachers who really make the subject come alive. You won`t get a master's degree from this book but you will have a terrific learning experience. A New York Times Notable Book of the Year for 2005.

  • Freakonomics

Freakonomics is a thought provoking book that causes you to look at the world from a different point of view. It is not the typical economics book1 The author poses a question and then proceeds to answer it. The questions, however, are not everyday economics questions but rather questions such as "What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common" or "Where have all the criminals gone". Fascinating stuff to say the least!

good price...very good book for thinking like an economist

  • an OKAY book

NY Times Bestseller List? I'm sorry, but I just don't see its appeal. Aside from a few good points made with TOO MANY words -- over explaining the authors' theories, if you will -- I found this book rather boring. It was unnecessarily repetitive in some parts and seemed to jump from one topic to another with little or no transition. Like I said, they raise some good points, and readers will likely agree, as I do, that some of them make a lot of sense. For example, a real estate agent will steer you away from holding out for more money when selling your home. This is because the extra amount (which puts thousands more in your pocket) only puts a few hundred more in his. Showing how these numbers work can be very interesting; but I only needed a page or two to "get it." On the plus side, punctuation and sentence structure was very good -- better than some books I have read lately!

  • Thought provoking

This is a heck of a read. Not politically correct but not offensive either. Really thought provoking. It addresses a lot of what we just accept as part of life -- or more importantly the favorable trends that politicians take credit for.

  • Though the idea of listening to an economics text may bring to mind nightmarish visions of incomprehensible facts, figures and graphs, this audiobook is refreshingly accessible and engrossing. Journalist Dubner reads with just the right mix of enthusiasm and awe," revealing juicy morsels of wisdom on everything from what sumo wrestlers and teachers have in common (a propensity to cheat) to whether parents can really push their kids to greatness by buying them Baby Einstein toys and enlisting them in numerous before- and after-school activities (not really). The only section that doesn't translate well to the format is the final one on naming conventions. The lists of ""White Girl Names"" and ""Black Girl Names"," and ""Low-End"" names and ""High-End"" names can be mind-numbing", though the text that breaks up these lists will intrigue. Overall, however, these unusual investigations by Levitt," the ""rogue"" of the subtitle", make for meaty-and entertaining-listening.
