The articles vary in length in proportion to significance, covering in about one page, for example, the city of Acre and its significance as a commercial and political center from the 15th century, and in about 10 pages (including a map), the War of 1967. Each entry includes a bibliography with listings ranging in number from a couple to, impressively, a couple dozen resources. Cross references and numerous blind entries guide readers to related entries. Important as a vehicle for unifying the contents is the detailed 50-page chronology in the third volume. It begins with prehistory, covers chunks of time through 1900, then proceeds year-by-year through 2001, and switches to an almost day-by-day account through June 14, 2009.
