Robert Sabuda fans will not be dissatisfied with the pop-up king`s latest breathtaking work: a compendium of colorful, energetic dinosaurs. He and coauthor Matthew Reinhart explore the thrilling history of these ancient beasts -- who lived for almost 180 million years--from their first appearance to their mystifying extinction. Absorbing information on over 50 different dinosaurs is provided. Each page explodes open with one enormous dinosaur in the center, be it the blue-spiked, purple and orange ankylosaurus; a couple of sparring frilled, green triceratops; or the unbelievable yellow-and-blue-crested feathered archaeopteryx, about to take flight. These large pop-ups are surrounded by small, sturdy flaps that, once carefully unfolded, reveal a smaller world of dinosaurs, from the tiny-brained stegosaurus to the plant-eating hadrosaurs of the Cretaceous Period. A gorgeous, exciting collection including over 35 meticulously created pop-ups. Named one of Publishers Weekly`s Best Children`s Books of 2005. A 2005 New York Times Notable Book and Best Illustrated Children`s Book.

Purchased for my grandson. He absolutely loved the pop-outs, the best we have ever seen anywhere, which peaked his interest in learning all he can about dinosaurs. We all are very happy with this product

  • Fantastic Dinosaurs !!

It is a beautiful book with the pop-ups. I thought I would get in for my grand-daughter but after getting it, it is a collectable for the whole family to enjoy and take care of. My son thought it was intriguing and said it would be kept on a shelf and they would take it down and look at it together. The Tyrannosaurus in the middle almost leaps off the page and there are so many other little doors to open with smaller pop-ups. It is too intricate to just be a kid's book and deserves to be taken care of. I will definately be ordering more, especially The Fairies....

  • Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Dinosaurs

Absolutely a perfect gift for my nephew's 3rd birthday! It has lovely pop-ups and great information. He and his 4-year old sister love hearing their mum & dad read it to them. Perfection!!

  • Sabuda Knocks It Out Of The Park!

This is our second pop-up book by master pop-up artist, Sabuda. This is an amazing book and is one that I highly recommend purchasing if you are interested. The dinosaurs really do pop out of the book at you- especially the T-Rex on the next to last page. The content regarding the dinosaur era is also fantastic, but at this point, an afterthought for our 20 month old. I look forward to having this book in our library for a long, long time. I also intend to purchase the other volume of the Ecyclopedia series, and anything he does in the future!

  • Starred ReviewPaper engineers Sabuda (Winter's Tale, reviewed above) and Reinhart, who teamed up for The Movable Mother Goose, have a go at dinosaurs in this playful and edifying pop-up. It can be tough to concentrate on the Mesozoic Era, or on the skeletal differences between saurischians and ornithischians, with black-and-green velociraptors jumping from page gutters," a blue-green brachiosaurus towering overhead or pachycepalosaurs (""""the original headbangers", with extra-bony skulls) lurking behind gatefolds. The coauthors imagine the dinosaurs as multicolored creatures, and their gecko-to-iguana-size models come in a rainbow of sky blues, rusty reddish browns, canary yellows and speckled foresty greens. In one alarming spread, an iron-red Tyrannosaurus rex with yellow teeth reaches out to nip the unsuspecting reader on the nose; this spread's lift-the-flap extras, hard to reach with T. rex's jaws in the way, include an ochre-yellow allosaurus ripping a bloody hunk of flesh from an unfortunate green herbivore. Yet for all these bells and whistles, the coauthors balance the lively 3D material with sidebars on extinction," paleontologists' discoveries (and mistakes) and practical details (stegosaurus's armor plates were """"bigger than cafeteria trays""""; diplodocus was """"as long as two school buses""""). With so many layers and moving paper parts-watercolored on all sides-readers may begin to feel like paleontologists unearthing fossils. Dino fans won't be disappointed. Ages 5-up. (Aug.)
