The History behind Middle Earth
The Silmarillion is a wonderful predecessor to the Lord of The Rings. It gives you a rich background of how Middle Earth first was created and then the dwellings of Elves, Dwarfs, and the race of Mankind. This is essential reading in order to fully grasp the history behind the Lord of The Rings. This book is full of characters and names (50-60 page index of names of characters alone) that takes a while to grasp, enough action to read twice. Wonderfully put together into an enticing story mixed with the deep history. I would also recommend reading Tolkien's The Hobbit after this to get the full feeling that was meant to be known going into TLOR. Well worth the small price!
