Jennifer Beaver
Food plants have their own ornamental value, adding harmony to existing landscapes without creating a separate vegetable garden. They also provide a fresh, healthy alternative to the tasteless and woody fruits and vegetables bred for long-distance transportation and shipped to our grocery stores from all over the world. In this book, we show how, with just a little effort, you can augment your landscape with edibles of every description in an environmentally sustainable manner: * Veggie favorites: tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, beans and onions * Berries: blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries * The superhealthy: flax, broccoli, kale and garlic * The oddly beautiful: Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, asparagus and artichokes * The ancient and exotic: quinoa, amaranth and fennel * Plus starting, maintaining and harvesting an edible garden, propagation and winter care, and solutions to common garden problems.

  • Favorite gardening book!

This is the one gardening book I own that I keep going back to, time and time again. It is a smaller book, easy to flip through with beautiful color images on every page. This book gives you the basics of more plants than you could ever imagine in your garden. I primarily grow vegetables and each one is given a two to four page spread. Enough to give you some great info on how to grow/harvest the plant without being overwhelming. Each listing also suggests good varieties to grow and potential problem pests. I am not always good at keeping seed packets to refer to and find they don't always supply me with enough info anyway. This book does a great job of filling in the gaps and excites me about gardening. The price may seem a little high for a smaller book but I've found it to be well worth it!

  • Great Book About Local Gardening!

Thsi book is written with the california Gardener in mind. many of the plants she recommends though, I would not see being able to be grown in the mountains, where it gets cold at times of the year, but since we are close to the coast, I found the book highly informative and will be using it to plot the rest of my organic garden here at home.
