Emotionally wrung-out from her divorce, the painful ending of a subsequent love affair, and a general, long-standing feeling of malaise, novelist and journalist Elizabeth Gilbert decides to recharge herself through a year's worth of travel, believing that her return to happiness could be found through exploring both physical gratification and spiritual peace and then determining an appropriate balance between the two. She pursues the first part of her program (eating, drinking, and talking) in Italy, the second in India (joining an ashram), and the third in Bali (studying with a medicine man).

This is an inspirational story about recoverying oneself after loss. Though I was initially put off by the writer's cavalier style and found little of interest in her journey through Italy, I found the section on India to be both inspiring and wise. If you are like me, this book will restore hope that things can be better and that you can find peace if you pursue it.
This fabulous book was recommended to me by a friend. After reading it, I ordered multiple copies from Overstock to pass on to other friends. I was not willing to give up my original copy for fear of it not being returned, as I plan to re-read it. Overstock shipped promptly and the price was perfect for a "pass-a-long".
I loved this book and didn't want it to end. It is an important read for anyone who is searching for happiness, balance or spirituality. But it's not just a guide; it's entertaining and funny, too.
I really enjoyed this book...It was intriguing that the story was actually about the author...the "Eat" and "Love" sections seemed to flow a little more than the "pray" section...however still enjoyed the entire book.

Starred ReviewGilbert (The Last American Man ) grafts the structure of romantic fiction upon the inquiries of reporting in this sprawling yet methodical travelogue of soul-searching and self-discovery. Plagued with despair after a nasty divorce, the author, in her early 30s, divides a year equally among three dissimilar countries, exploring her competing urges for earthly delights and divine transcendence. First, pleasure: savoring Italy's buffet of delights - the world's best pizza," free-flowing wine and dashing conversation partners - Gilbert consumes la dolce vita as spiritual succor. ""I came to Italy pinched and thin", she writes, but soon fills out in waist and soul. Then, prayer and ascetic rigor: seeking communion with the divine at a sacred ashram in India, Gilbert emulates the ways of yogis in grueling hours of meditation, struggling to still her churning mind. Finally, a balancing act in Bali," where Gilbert tries for equipoise ""betwixt and between"" realms", studies with a merry medicine man and plunges into a charged love affair. Sustaining a chatty, conspiratorial tone, Gilbert fully engages readers in the year's cultural and emotional tapestry - conveying rapture with infectious brio, recalling anguish with touching candor - as she details her exotic tableau with history, anecdote and impression.
