  This book is part travel, part history, and a glimpse into a time and place that is seldom visited by westerners. It describes a way of life that has existed for thousands of years, but which is quite endangered in the 21st century. Fascinating, well written, and easy to read. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in China and its' cultural history, Buddhism, monastic life in general, or just a good travel adventure.
