A fine composite set of Dvorak symphonies
This complete set of Dvorak symphonies issued on the bargain label Brilliant Classics draws from three complete or partial digitally recorded sets by Neeme Jarvi, Jiri Belohlavek and Mariss Jansons. There are no weak links in the set. Jarvi conducts the first four symphonies in very fine performances and the recordings (by Chandos) are first class. Belohlavek's renditions of the symphonies 5-7, also originally recorded by Chandos, is if anything even finer, having the benefit of idiomatic playing from the Czech Philharmonic. Jansons rounds out the set with his EMI recordings of the Eighth and Ninth symphonies. Here the sound is a little more veiled but the performances are alert and vital. Each disc is put into a cardboard slip case and the slip cases are stacked into a cardboard box. The liner notes are extensive and informative. This set is an excellent way to collect the later masterpieces while getting to know the earlier symphonies, which are a real discovery for me!
