I started with 2nd ed. Played with a group that mixed second and first ed. rules. However, we were a little liberal and used some rules that, strangely enough, became incorporated into 3rd edition. I stopped playing shortly before third ed. came out, however, and have only recently started back up. This is a must for all dms, of course. Even if you don't grab the box set, pick up the 4th ed. The rules have been modified to fit a more logical progression in leveling characters, and there is so much else that has been streamlined from the old days. I've heard the "it looks like video game mechanics" argument. Personally, I feel that it's a natural progression on both sides of that coin. I don't think Gygax would disapprove.

DnD 4.0e Core Rulebooks
from Dacula, GA,  Jul 7, 2008

Wizards of the Coast have changed Dungeons and Dragons significantly with the 4.0 edition. Aside from presenting the new rules, these books offer extensive artwork and background to help set the tone of the game. I don't think a direct comparison can be made to the 3.5 edition since they are so different. If you are interested in having the latest edition and trying it out, then this is a great buy. If you were looking for something between 3.51 and 3.99 edition (in other words, very similar to 3.5) this is not where you need to look.

Great content, questionable quality
from Las Vegas, NV,  Jun 23, 2008

The overall redesign of the 30 year old game engine is actually pretty nice. They have removed a lot of the complexity that 3rd edition introduced. Learning the "new" system was very quick and our first games ran very smoothly. My only gripe is that while the books are visually stunning (cover art is so-so), you have to be careful not to touch the pages with damp or oily fingers (HELLO, potato chips anyone!?!) The pages are glossy and the ink seems to be water soluable so you can cause smudges very easy. Watch your kids. :) Very happy with the new game system and the expandability will hopefully keep this edition in play for a long time.
