Duma Key, Stephen King's latest horror novel, is an exploration of isolation and its effect on the psyche of an artist. In this case, a self-made millionaire suffers the loss of an arm in a tragic construction accident. The resulting aftermath, costs him his sanity, his wife and family and much of his wealth. Edgar Freemantle chooses to start over in a remote, tropical island in the Florida Keys where the only other inhabitants are a wealthy elderly woman and her caretaker. From the isolation of society in a frigid northern winter to isolation in a remote, lush tropical environ, the former building magnate draws on his interest in art for his rehabilitation and recuperation. Amazingly, he becomes a creative and dynamic painter whose art gives not only the power to predict the future but and also alter it. It appears the three inhabitants of the island have mutually suffered from severe traumas that draw them together. As Edgar investigates the mysteries of Duma Key, it becomes clear where the tragic roots of his artistic gifts come from and the dear price he pays for them.
