I needed a book on the different dog breeds that were recognized by the AKC, and also went into some detail about the dogs temperment, its health, the history and and the other specifics like height and weight. This book does that but also has a wonderful rating system (that it explains in great detail how to use) about ease of training, affection level, energy level, basically how good of a pet it would make for first time pet owners. What I mean is it went above and beyond what I expected. So in my opinion it is good for someone that needs it for school (like me) or for someone that is looking for what kind of pet they would like to get. I would highly reccommend this book for anyone interested in either learning about dogs, needing a book for school, looking for a pet or basically any reason they are looking for a book about dog breeds!

This book contains a lot of background information on dogs and how wolves relate. It got alittle boring for me because I was interested in learning about my old golden's recent behavior changes.

I lot of good general and breed specific information that is handy to have when you want to know why your dog is doing whatever it is they are doing, or, in some cases not doing. The book starts with the selection of the best fit between you and the type of dog you should look for. Then on to the puppy stuff once you get a dog home. In further chapters you get down to what you need to do in different situations where your dog is not doing what you had hoped for or maybe what the dog hopes for. A good book at an outstanding value.

I bought this because the dog featured on the Havanese page is mine! The description of each breed, while fairly accurate, is not the complete AKC standard. The value of this book is to get a good overview of the various breeds as you begin your search for a dog. The AKC Breed Book, though, should be your other purchase, along with this one, in order to have the accepted standard for each breed. This book would be great for a younger child, as well, who is interested in dogs.

I bought the book for my daughter's Vet Tech Program in Tulsa, OK. It was recommended by the instructor. I was able to see many of the pages on-line and thought the book looked like something I would just like to have for myself as I am a dog lover/owner. I plan on buying another one! Thanks OS for the good price-.

I keep a number of these books on hand,(unfortunately), but they are always much appreciated and very easy to read . The receiver finds great comfort in knowing that there are a lot of us dog lovers that have had to grieve over a special family loss and it is a little bit humorous too. My favorite part is the back page where you can actually send a picture of your dog friend to the real Dog Chapel in Vermont. I hope to visit this chapel someday.

This is a very interesting book. Lots of details about how a dog's mind works. It's been helpfull in our competitive training. The only down side is that it is sometimes medically technical. I have the medical background so I find it very interesting, but someone who doesn't might find some parts of it "dry".

We were whelping our first litter of puppies and this book was VERY helpful. We felt ready to breed and whelp puppies after reading this book and rereading this book and then reading it again while our puppies have been born.
Whether you're taking your dog to the dog park or just playing fetch in the backyard, you want him to be comfortable and safe. The right dog collar can help you take care of your dog at home or on-the-go and can even help with training a new dog. Here is more information about the different types of dog collars, so you can choose the best one for your pet.
One of the first things you need for a new dog is a quality dog kennel. The right dog kennel can help potty train your puppy, make traveling and vet visits with your dog easier and give your dog a cozy place to curl up at night or to keep out of mischief while you're away. The wrong size dog kennel, however, can make things uncomfortable for your pooch and a pain for you. But how do you know what size kennel you need for your dog? As a rule of thumb, kennels and crates should be at least 4 inches taller and longer than your dog and allow him to stand, sit and turn around easily. You'll also want to make sure there is water and a blanket or towel in there for him. The following guidelines can help you find the right fit for your pup.
By nature, dogs are playful and fun-loving, and dog toys can help you make sure your dog is enjoying herself. Pet toys serve a variety of purposes for your dog. They are made in a huge range of shapes, materials and sizes to suit pooches of all stripes. Because there are so many different types of dog supplies and toys, finding the right one for your dog might seem intimidating. There's no reason to worry, however. Your furry friend uses his portable carrier for car rides, trips to the veterinarian, and maybe even on an airplane. Whether you're dealing with muddy paws or simply pet fur, carriers and pet strollers can get dirty quickly, and it's a good idea to clean them frequently. Follow these steps to clean your cat or dog's carrier thoroughly.
If you have a feathered, scaly, or furry friend in your home, you know they get plenty of attention every day. Sometimes you want to do something extra special for your pet. Here are five ideas on how to show them how much you love and appreciate them, whether they're a cat, a dog, a lizard, a bird, or even a guinea pig.
The world of fashion is branching out to our furry friends. Whether your pet is sporting a rhinestone collar, a pair of booties, or a dapper sweater, it's fun to see your animal all dressed up. There are some important aspects to consider if you're thinking of buying pet apparel for your cat or dog. These tips will help you choose the best clothes for your pooch or pussy cat.
Weighing in at 50 pounds or more, large breed dogs require special animal feeders to make mealtime easier on their joints, digestive system and spine. Specialized dog bowls are also a healthier choice for big dogs since they help minimize bloat. Excessive air buildup in a dog's stomach can lead to serious health complications, including obstructed veins in the abdomen, damage to internal organs, low blood pressure, shock or even death. Fortunately, several types of dog bowls can make mealtime healthier and more comfortable for a large breed dog.
A new pet is fun and exciting, and proper pet supplies are an important part of getting your new pup established in your home. Did you know that cats sleep an average of 16 hours a day and dogs are close behind! This makes choosing the right pet bed for your furry friend extremely important. With all those hours of cat (or dog) naps, you'll want them to be as comfortable as possible. Different animals have different needs, and no pet bed is a one-size-fits-all design. Here is how to find the right one for Fluffy or Fido.
When you bring a new pet home, you'll want to give him a cozy pet bed to curl up in at the end of the day. Pet beds come in different sizes and shapes for different types and sizes of pets. Most popular for dogs and cats, pet beds give you a good way to keep your furry friend from sleeping on your furniture. It's important to choose pet supplies that meet your pet's needs. The pet bed you choose should provide support, security and comfort for your dog or cat, so choose one that is right for your pet's sleeping habits and for his breed. The following list of pet bed types can help you find the right bed for you and your companion..
Treating your dog to the best means giving him a cozy place to curl up in at night. If you have a small dog, however, finding the right dog bed isn't always easy. Smaller dogs and puppies may get lost in a bed designed for a larger dog, and may not even sleep on it at all. When you're shopping for pet beds for your little dog, you'll want to consider these tips.
A dog door or pet door gives both the owner and his dog freedom. The dog can go in and out of the house at will, and the owner has flexibility in his schedule -- no more running home to let pets out. Purchasing a dog door comes with a risk, however, especially if you have a large pet that requires a dog/pet door that a human may fit through. Fortunately, there are safe options, such as an electronic dog door that works only with your dog via a radio identification chip or an electromagnetic dog door, to protect your family and your home. A dog door does not need to be the exact size of or larger than your dog for your pet to fit through it comfortably. Read on for tips on buying a dog/pet door for your home.
Chew toys for dogs fall into several categories, and the best kinds of pet toys for your dog depend in part on your dog's habits. You don't want to choose pet chew toys for a dog that swallows rawhides instead of chewing on them or a very hard chew toy for an older dog with missing teeth. Some dog chew toys are safe if ingested piece by piece, while other dog toys are meant to be gnawed on for a long time. Read on for the best dog chew toys for your pet.
Whether you have a new puppy or an old dog, getting him to sleep in a kennel can be a chore. Maybe he wants to sleep with you on your bed, or perhaps he prefers to snooze on the sofa. With a little bit of training and encouragement, however, you can train your dog to sleep in a kennel at night. These tips can help you train a dog to sleep in a dog kennel instead of on your furniture.
Every pet owner knows that pets are part of the family, so of course you want to give them the best. Your dog may be easy to please, but that doesn't mean she deserves an uncomfortable dog bed. Every pooch should have a cozy dog bed to retreat to when tired. If you're interested in making your puppy's cage a castle, take a look below to learn how to increase comfort in a dog kennel.
Many dog owners save money by purchasing pet grooming supplies rather than taking their pets to a professional groomer. Purchasing a set of electric dog clippers is an excellent investment for at-home grooming, but finding the right set of dog clippers can be confusing. Several factors must be taken into consideration, including the amount of money you'd like to spend and the breed of dog you'll be grooming. With several styles of dog grooming clippers available, you'll be sure to find a set that meets your expectations.
They say that dogs are man's best friend, but did you know that studies have shown that owning pets can reduce stress, relieve depression, lower blood pressure, and even reduce health-care costs? Show your pooch how much you appreciate him by making him happy and comfortable in your home. Whether he's a new puppy or a long-time family pet, this guide will help you find all the right pet supplies for you and your dog.
When selecting a dog bowl, consider the needs of your pet and the environment where the dog bowl will be used. Tall dogs are more comfortable eating from an elevated bowl, while shorter breeds benefit from low-sided dog bowls at ground level. When shopping for pet supplies, consider options such as a nonskid base for bowls that will be used on a smooth surface or stainless steel construction for bowls that will be used with moist dog food, as moist food has a tendency to stain bowls made from porous materials. Keep in mind that a lightweight plastic bowl is easy for an active puppy to tip over, so choosing a heavy, sturdy bowl for young puppies is a good idea.
