The title of this compilation is somewhat misleading. While it contains a couple of country outlaw David Allan Coe`s best known tunes (the romantic ballad "Would You Lay With Me [in a Field of Stone] and the old-school cheating song "Now I Lay Me Down to Cheat"), the lion`s share of Coe`s signature tunes are absent from this disc. Nevertheless, BIGGEST HITS does a fine job of representing Coe`s multi-faceted talents.
Coe`s soul side is represented by an energetic version of the Otis Redding classic "Dock of the Bay" and the open-hearted "Take Time to Know Her." The jaunty "London Homesick Blues" is known to many as the Austin City Limits theme song. Coe makes a light-hearted examination of country music lineage on "Hank Williams Junior." There`s also a take on "Stand by Your Man" that predates Lyle Lovett`s by several years and doesn`t hide behind irony. "Juanita" nods broadly in the direction of Jimmy Buffett. These songs may not all be Coe`s BIGGEST HITS, but that doesn`t mean they`re not worthwhile.
