Twin brothers born of an illicit affair between an Indian nun and a British doctor experience love, loss, and the true healing power of medicine in this epic tale. Marion and Shiva Stone are raised as orphans at the Ethiopian mission hospital where they were born, after their mother dies during childbirth and their father vanishes. Their shared love for medicine forges a tight bond between them, but their love for Genet, a young girl at the hospital, eventually forces them apart. Marion goes to America, where he comes of age as an intern at an impoverished Bronx medical clinic, but he can never leave his past completely behind. This is the first novel from Dr. Abraham Verghese (MY OWN COUNTRY), and he weaves several detailed descriptions of unusual medical emergencies into the compelling narrative.

Overstock was cheaper than Amazon for the book. I had never before looked at Overstock to buy books. It came promptly and arrived in perfect shape.

  • Cutting For Stone

I am a relatively new customer of Overstock, but I am absolutely hooked! The service is amazing! I've belonged to a monthly book club for four years and order all the books online. Sometimes they don't arrive for up to two weeks. This is the first time I've ordered a book from Overstock, but it won't be the last! The book arrived in two days, in perfect condition. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

  • Not a light read

The story is good but there is a lot of detailed medical details throughout. Sometimes it reads like a medical students dictionary. It is very long, over 500 pages. I would recommed to anyone with an interest in the medical field.

Cutting For Stone came highly recommended to me by friends and I looked forwards to reading it. Upon reeiving it last week I read it rather compulsively, finishing its many pages over a 4 day period. I emerged with mixed feelings. On the one hand I learned a great deal about Ethiopa and it politics but on the other hand I felt a disappointment. Somehow the book had failed to take a leap out of the ordinary and into a category such as the work of Rushdie. Nontheless it is a good read and I recommended it to my book group for next months book discussion.

  • Starred ReviewLauded for his sensitive memoir (My Own Country) about his time as a doctor in eastern Tennessee at the onset of the AIDS epidemic in the '80s, Verghese turns his formidable talents to fiction, mining his own life and experiences in a magnificent, sweeping novel that moves from India to Ethiopia to an inner-city hospital in New York City over decades and generations. Sister Mary Joseph Praise, a devout young nun, leaves the south Indian state of Kerala in 1947 for a missionary post in Yemen. During the arduous sea voyage, she saves the life of an English doctor bound for Ethiopia, Thomas Stone, who becomes a key player in her destiny when they meet up again at Missing Hospital in Addis Ababa. Seven years later, Sister Praise dies birthing twin boys: Shiva and Marion, the latter narrating his own and his brother's long, dramatic, biblical story set against the backdrop of political turmoil in Ethiopia, the life of the hospital compound in which they grow up and the love story of their adopted parents, both doctors at Missing. The boys become doctors as well and Verghese's weaving of the practice of medicine into the narrative is fascinating even as the story bobs and weaves with the power and coincidences of the best 19th-century novel.
